How does remote unlocking work? [Codes]

If you decide to unlock your phone, you usually have two choices, bring it to a store and get it unlocked on the spot, or you could simply unlock it remotely. Prices have dropped recently on remote unlocking and many customers prefer unlocking their phones using this method.

2007 Price for Rogers/Fido code: 70$CA with 3 days wait.
2009 Price for Rogers/Fido code: 15$CA with 3 hour wait.

Driving to a location just for the store to tell you that the phone cannot be unlocked can lead to frustration, loss of time and money for transportation. Remote unlocking eases with all these problems, because everything is done from home. The instructions are extremely simple to enter and are always successful. Companies allow unlocking through codes for several reasons, some of them, unlock your phone once the contract is up, while others charge a hefty price (Rogers charges between 199$ and 269$ for a code.)

There are several databases in which codes reside for unlocking. Usually, the carriers have the codes and so do the manufacturers of the phones. For example, Blackberry phones can be unlocked via the Rogers databases or RIM’s own database. The only difference is in price. The current price for Rogers database is 15.00$CA whereas RIM’s database queries cost close to 50$CA, and they take roughly 1 week to retrieve. You might think that why anybody would use RIM’s database than… It is for a simple reason, Rogers only has Rogers locked Blackberry codes, whereas RIM’s database allows access to all countries and carriers. Also if a code comes back as not found on Rogers, we can always resort to manufacturer’s databases which usually has the codes.

Which phones can be unlocked remotely?

Rogers locked – all phones via codes except for a few 3G Samsung phones and Apple Iphone 3G
Fido locked – all phones except for 3G Samsung, Sony Ericsson and Apple Iphone 3G
ATT/Cingular – all phones except Apple Iphone 2G/3G
T-Mobile – all phones except G1, and Sidekicks

There are other solutions for the phones that cannot be unlocked such as using the manufacturer’s databases, but usually cost a bit more. You will need to contact us to get the exact pricing. Note that these prices change weekly and can go up and down.
