Why unlock your cell phone?
There are many reasons why phones need to be unlocked. For the most part is because a customer is looking to change providers. For example, say you have purchased a Rogers phone and your contract has ended or you simply decided to cancel it for whatever reason. That phone can only be used on Rogers. If you decide you would prefer to switch to Fido instead, you would need to purchase a new phone which will either be too expensive to buy the phone without a contract or you will need to lock yourself in with a contract for a few more years.
But since you have a good phone, you might want to unlock it and simply use it with Fido, not needing to purchase another phone. Another viable option is to sell the Rogers locked phone, and purchase another Fido capable phone. The second option seems like a bit of a hassle, but might be required for such phones as iPhone which currently cannot be unlocked.
Another reason a person might wish to unlock their cell phone is due to travelling. Rogers charges anywhere in between $4.00 to $13.00 a minute when roaming outside the country. If you plan on travelling to Europe and use your Rogers SIM card, a few minutes might end up costing more than the whole trip. For that reason, you can simply unlock your cell phone and swap the SIM cards when you get to Europe. You can purchase pay-as-you-go cards in Europe straight from the airports. It’s that simple. The cost will be astronomically smaller using prepaid SIM cards compared to roaming on a Canadian carrier.
A similar reason why someone might wish to unlock their cell phone is because the phone is not offered by a local carrier. For example, the T-Mobile’s G1 Android phone is not available in Canada. Someone might wish to use the phone here in Canada; therefore the only solution will be to get the phone unlocked and use it in Canada regardless of the local carriers.
One last reason someone might wish to unlock the cell phone is to increase its resale value. Some phones are only offered on one carrier such as the Blackberry bold which is only offered by Rogers in Canada. Unlocking this phone will allow you to sell it to Fido, ATT, T-Mobile and Rogers customers, thus gaining a greater customer base for the product you are trying to sell.
