Can the Apple iPhone 3G be unlocked?
UPDATE: We can now unlock your iphone 3G without using SIM card addons. We use software unlock. For more information visit the last updated post.
This reading applies as of December 09, 2008 to all version of the Apple Iphone 3G (Firmware versions 2.0, 2.0.1, 2.0.2, 2.1, 2.2).
Yes and no. There are SIM cards such as turbosim, hypersim and a variety of other SIM play-on words exist. Although this technology doesn’t truly unlock your phone, it will allow you to use other SIM cards different from your carriers. But there are lots of downsides to these technologies. Firstly some of the older devices will need you to cut the SIM card. Don’t forget, a replacement Rogers or Fido SIM card costs 40$ to buy it from the store. Another downside is that these devices will fail randomly and without any notice. The phone will display that it sometimes doesn’t have the SIM card inserted, or that there is no service. This can become very frustrating for the average user and might diminish the enjoyment of the Apple Iphone. The 3G Iphone is a real technology marvel and I would recommend using it as such. These devices should only be used as a last resort, say for travelling overseas and you wish to have an unlocked Apple Iphone.
The Iphone dev team has been working on software unlock for quite some time, but it seems Apple did its job this time. The older 2G or original Apple Iphones can still be unlocked. Contact me if you wish to get it done, it’s only 20$ and I’ll update it to the latest version as well.
